Part 1

Part 1

THE THEORY TEST

The Theory Test is computer based whereby you touch the screen of the computer to highlight your answer.

The questions total 100 and are in multiple-choice format. This test lasts 90 minutes and the pass mark is 85%.

However, the questions are banded into four sections of 25.

·         road procedure

·         traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians, mechanical knowledge

·         driving tests, disabilities, law

·         publications, instructional techniques

You must achieve an 80% pass mark in each band and in total achieve 85%. For example achieving a banding score of 22, 22, 21, and 20 would give a total of 85 and would pass. However, a score of 25, 25, 25, and 19 would give a total of 94 but would fail because 80% (20) had not been achieved in the final band. Therefore a broad knowledge is required of all subjects.

In November 2002 a Hazard Perception Test (HPT) was included in the theory test. Candidates will receive information from the Driving Standards Agency on this format. In general, candidates will have to identify hazards as they appear on a computer screen. They will be assessed on the speed of identification and the number of hazards actually identified.

As of September 2003 a pass mark of 57 out of 75 is required in this section. Therefore to pass Part One it is required for candidates to achieve a pass of 85% in the multiple choice section and a pass of 57 in the hazard perception element. Both sections must be passed to achieve an overall pass for Part One of the ADI exams.

THE PART 1 HOME STUDY PROGRAMME

This consists of:

·         Study Notes Book

·         Workbook 1 – Driving Procedures

·         Workbook 2 – Car Control, Mechanical Principles, Pedestrians & Traffic Signs

·         Workbook 3 – Driving Test , Disabilities & Law

·         Workbook 4 - Instructional Techniques

All of the above Workbooks are broken down into individual Study Units, each of which directs you to specific sections of the text books for study. When you have read these you complete the relevant Checkpoint. The Checkpoints each contain 25 multiple choice questions similar to those in the part 1 exam.

There are Mock Exams throughout the workbook course and you will be closely monitored by telephone call, office appointments and/or post.

The ADI Part 1 Test of Theory includes questions on:

·         Driver and vehicle licensing; and

·         The Driving Test syllabus.

To help you understand the principles, rules and procedures involved in the above the home study includes the following forms:

·         D100 - What you need to know about driving licences.

·         V100 - Registering and Licensing your motor vehicle.

·         TT26 - Application for a Driving Theory Test Appointment.

·         DL26 - Application for a Practical Driving Test Appointment.

Links Driver Training Group,  Home Study Programme is probably the most effective training material of its kind, being regularly updated and checked against current requirements. Not only does it prepare the candidate thoroughly for the ADI Part 1 Test of Theory, but is also provides most of the theoretical information required to support training in preparation for the two practical elements of the examination.  That is why I recommend and use this system.
